Freyberg (Malus Domestica)

Synonyms:

Origin: New Zealand

History: Developed in 1934 by J. H. Kidd at Greytown in the Wairarapa Valley from a Golden Delicious × Cox’s Orange Pippin cross. After his death the seedlings went to DSIR in Havelock North, where Dr W. McKenzie selected this variety for amateur growers; it was introduced in 1958 and named for Lord Freyberg, New Zealand’s Governor-General (1946–1952).

Fruit Description: Medium-sized, with yellow-green to golden skin often showing russeting at the stem end; the flesh is crisp and fine-grained, creamy white to pale green. The flavor is aromatic and sweet with a honeyed character, showing notes of banana, sweet spice, and a licorice-like hint; acidity is mild and juice can be low, so some fruit may taste subdued. Flavors can deepen with a later harvest or brief storage, and it suits both fresh eating and cooking.
