Bramley’s Seedling (Malus Domestica)

Synonyms: Crimson Bramley

Origin: UK

History: Developed circa 1809–1813 by Miss Mary Anne Brailsford in a garden at Southwell, Nottinghamshire. Introduced by H. Merryweather in 1865 and exhibited in 1876; wider recognition followed the 1883 Congress. The original tree later blew down but re-sprouted from the trunk, and the variety has more recently been introduced in Obuse, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

Fruit Description: Large green fruit often showing a brown-orange blush with red streaks and some russeting near the stalk; the flesh is white with a faint green hue. The flavor is dominated by very high acidity—distinctly sharp with low sweetness and especially sour when underripe—with a classic apple aroma and a lemony tang; when fully ripe it is juicier and slightly less tart yet remains notably acidic. Firm, crisp, fine-grained flesh when raw; when cooked it breaks down to a light, smooth puree well suited to pies, sauces, baking, and for blending in cider.
